October 15, 2009 - Pregnant with Twins

I'm currently pregnant with twins and even though I'm very excited about it, I'm also dealing with a little bit of anxiety. My main issue is breastfeeding - is it possible with twins. I remember breastfeeding my son and feeling like it was never enough. How can I be sure I'm producing enough for two? Is there anything I can do now while still pregnant to boost up my supply when the time does come?

Congratulations, how exciting for you. Finding out you are having twins is wonderful news but does flood parents with anxiety. Choosing to breastfeed has so many benefits for you and your babies, but breastfeeding multiples can be a bit frustrating at times.  It is absolutely possible to breastfeed your twins and don’t worry, the body knows what to do and tends to produce more than enough milk in the beginning, then adjusts supply to demand.

Here are a few things you can do to help ensure that all goes well:

Eat well and stay hydrated
For now get plenty of rest and eat well. Make sure that you are well hydrated and that you drink and sip water all day. I know, you’ll be running to the bathroom every five minutes, but that will happen anyway. When the babies are born, getting rest remains important. Sleep when they sleep and try not to do too much, let the house be a mess for a while.

Call in the reserves
Accept help and ask for help, let friends and family assist you so you don’t get too tired or too stressed. This is not always easy, especially if you don’t like asking for help, but it is so important to get you and your babies off to a good, peaceful start.

Pump
Invest in a good breast pump. This will allow you to keep up production and to stockpile breast milk so others can help you feed the babies.

Practice makes perfect
Expect breastfeeding to be a little tricky. It is possible and more time efficient to feed both babies at once at least some of the time. Let others help you, at first, to get the babies into position. Over time you will figure it out and become a pro.

Connect and Mirror to your babies
Many moms worry that they will be spread too thin and not be able to give their babies individual attention. Don’t worry, cooing and smiling with both at the same time going back and forth between them is just fine. They will benefit from the sound of your voice even when it is focused on their sibling. Feeling a strong connection reduces your stress as well as the babies and keeps up milk production.

Enjoy them, the human heart can expand exponentially and there will be more than enough love and more than enough milk. Good luck to you and your babies!
