We have 3 children, ages 5, 2 and 3 months. We've been considering whether or not to get a dog or another other pet and we're wondering what your thoughts might be about this? We're wondering about pros/cons and whether it is good for children to be around animals when they are young and if it really does teach them responsibility as some people say it does. Thanks in advance.
Deciding whether or not to get a pet is a big decision and an even bigger responsibility. I can tell you first hand as we just got a puppy (a little pug, he’s very cute!), but I forgot how much work puppies are. He is a delight but into everything. I find it a huge challenge and that’s with my kids’ help - and they’re aged 16, 14 and 6! The puppy is up during the night, chews on things, and house-training has been a lot of work. He is a joy and we all get a kick out of him, but it is a big job!
Getting an older dog can be a little easier but you have to make sure they have the right temperament and personality with young children. This is a personal decision for you, so only you can make it. I’ll be honest; we’ve had fish, birds, hamsters, guinea pigs and rats in our house over the years and each time my husband and I ended up being the caregivers of these little creatures. The kids will be interested at first but the love affair can wear off pretty fast. Pets can teach children about empathy and unconditional love and all kinds of good things, but the bottom line is it will be more work for you. Having a pet can teach children about responsibility, but it can often end up being one more thing you have to direct and oversee.
So, the big question is do you really want a pet? You have to consider whether this addition to the family will make you happy and be a good thing for you and your spouse or partner. If the answer is yes than go for it, pets can be an absolute joy. If you are not so sure, then I would wait until your kids are a little older-- like 40 or so! :O)
