February 4, 2010 - When You Disagree With Your Doctor

We are having a problem with our doctor. We don't agree with what they're saying, and feel that the doctor is not taking us seriously. What can we do?

Not knowing what you and your doctor are disagreeing about makes it a little hard to answer this question, but I will do my best.

Good communication with your child’s doctor is important and you have to feel comfortable talking to them about your child’s health. Try going back the next time and explaining in a calm neutral way that you are not feeling heard and that you would like to discuss your concerns and see if you can work together towards a solution.

Make sure that you are open and listening too, sometimes we don't like hearing things that may in fact be true. If you are confident in your belief and really disagree, you can and should get a second opinion from another physician. You should also find another doctor that you do feel comfortable with.

Your child may also be picking up on the fact that you do not have confidence in this person and may begin to fear going to the doctor. Your child’s doctor is an important person in your life and a good relationship with them is best for everyone.

You can also seek out additional health advice from a naturopathic or homeopathic health care professional. Your child’s health is too important! Good luck to you.
